Forbes & Hamilton is for me the pinnacle of City cafe vibes. Though most don’t even know its name - it is much more frequently (and fondly) referred to as ‘the jersey milk place’. Yes, they make their coffee with jersey milk. Yes, there is a little chalkboard sign inside reminding the customer that jersey milk is 90% more expensive than the regular supermarket stuff.
The chalkboard signs, of which there are many, each as snarky as the last, are one of the best things about the jersey milk place. That and the wooden tables and benches so worn and pocked with marks and gouges that they look like they belonged to a school from the 1800s. But character is not all the place has to offer.
The coffee is exceptional. They use Monmouth beans and that jersey milk truly makes such a difference. I have never tasted a cappuccino so rich and creamy. The hot chocolate is to die for - not overly rich, but so smooth and comforting. The cup is just the right size to leave you satisfied. If there was a Platonic ideal of hot chocolate, this would be it.
If this wasn’t enough, the baked goods are also amazing. Hot cross buns from St John, the banana bread and the pecan pie are particular highlights.
