Last visited: i end up here once every few months
I almost don’t want to write this because I take everyone here and I want them to think I’m cool for knowing this hidden little spot. However, it certainly does belong in Gisselle’s London, so begrudgingly I include it here for it to get the recognition it deserves.
My favourite thing about basement sate is the location. My second favourite thing about basement sate is the small brass plaque next to the unassuming front door that reads “THIS IS NOT A BROTHEL. THERE ARE NO PROSTITUTES AT THIS ADDRESS”.
Once down the stairs you will see that it is indeed not a brothel but a warmly lit bar with leather chesterfields and little nooks to drink in. Cocktails are very reasonably priced, around £12-14 a pop and the ‘surprise me’ option is fun. I confess I haven’t tried the desserts, which is the other thing they’re known for but honestly when I peek at other tables it seems that everyone is just there for drinks.
Overall, it’s a great place to start/end a night in Soho.
